RAMROD Training Series - Ride # 5 - Paradise + Cayuse & Chinook Passes - Saturday July 15

The Ride: Routes range from 53.5 miles to 86 miles. Our short loop (53.5 miles) through Paradise is a classic. We will ride from Ohanapecosh to Packwood, Longmire and Paradise and ride down Stevens Canyon Road. People on the longer rides will continue to climb Cayuse Pass notorious to be the most challenging section of RAMROD, and will finish with the beautiful switchbacks up to Chinook Pass before returning to the Ohanapecosh ranger station.

Ride Start: Ohanapecosh Ranger Station Parking lot in the back (Mt Rainier National Park, WA)

Meet at: 8:30 AM for a 9:00 AM start.

Guides: Jean-Philippe Soulé (brisk).

Itinerary:
Route 1 - 53.5 miles - Paradise Loop
Route 2 - 86 miles - Paradise Loop + Cayuse Pass + Chinook Pass (79 miles if you turn around at Cayuse Pass)

Difficulty: We are starting from the Ohanapecosh Ranger. The first 11 miles to Packwood are flat, then a gradual climb starts to longmire, the last few miles to Paradise get steeper. Especially after Paradise, Cayuse and Chinook are challenging, but you may turn around at any time, and freewheel back to the parking lot. This ride is an excellent training for RAMROD. People are encouraged to ride at their own pace following the cue-sheets. There will be no sweep on this ride.

Pace: Brisk to High Brisk (16 to 21 mph). Cue sheets will be offered at the start and stronger riders are welcome to ride up front. Slower riders who can read a cue sheet and solve possible mechanical problems are also welcome.

Regroup/Experience: No regroups after the start of the Climb. All riders are expected to be fit enough to participate in this ride and should be able to follow a cue sheet and/or map and to fix possible flats or problems. We recommend that you carry at least two spare tubes, a pump and a basic tool kit.

Lunch stop: We will stop for a short lunch break on top of Paradise. People on the long loop are encouraged to only make a short stop.

After Ride Feed: Diner or drink possible in Greenwater on the way back to Enumclaw.

Safety Issues: This ride is recommended for experienced moderate to strenuous cyclists. We encourage people to ride at their own pace and emphasize safety and strict adherence to traffic rules. Be aware of dehydration and heat exhaustion and bring some sunscreen. Helmets must be worn at all times.

Cancellation: Rain cancels/group decision in case of drizzle/light rain. Make sure you check this page on Friday night for updates.

Carpool: Let us know if you'd like to arrange carpooling.

RSVP: Your response helps us estimate the number of riders (and leads needed), print enough cue-sheets, and allows us to tell you if there are any last minute ride changes due to weather/road conditions or other emergencies.

Questions: Contact us prior to July 14.
