Mt Baker - Saturday July 14
Native Planet Classic and Passes of the Pyrenees Training Series

PoP Training Series: This is part of our training series for the Passes of the Pyrenees. (It is also a great training for RAMROD).

About this ride: There are two rides in Washington State that can’t be missed! The Native Planet Classic route (Washington Pass from both sides) and Mt Baker. They both offer stunning mountain scenery, a great challenge and a lot less traffic than Rainier National Park?. You don't need a cue sheet for this ride—there is only one road. We avoid the boring flat approach and start right from Glacier; It’s only 24 miles to the top parking lot of the ski area. Those who wish can do the climb twice to do 86 miles with almost 10,000 feet of elevation. The road was re-surfaced in 2005 making this a smooth ride. Don't miss it, join us.

Ride Start: Glacier town (last town on the way to Mt Baker ski area on SR-542)

Meet at: 9:00 AM for a 9:30 AM start. (Some of us will camp on Friday. Let us know if you'd like to join us)

Itinerary:
1 Climb - 48 miles - 4,723 feet - Glacier to Mt Baker ski area RT
Climb it again - 96 miles - 9,546 feet
Bring your family; non-cyclists can hike or just picnic

Difficulty: The ride to the ski area takes you up 4,723 feet through a series of switchbacks switchbacks reminiscent of the French Pyrenees. Climbing once is a must for all fit cyclists, climbing it twice is very challenging, particularly on a hot day. There will be no sweep on this ride. If you can't make the climb, you can turn around and wait for the group to return.

Pace: Your own pace (recommended from moderate and up). Everybody is encouraged to ride at his or her own pace. No cue sheets necessary (it's a single road up and back).

Regroup/Experience: Regroup at the top. All riders are expected to be fit enough to participate in this ride and must be able to fix possible flats or problems. We recommend that you carry at least two spare tubes, a pump and a basic tool kit.

Lunch stop: Bring a snack to eat on top. There is a deli with good pastries and a restaurant in the town of Glacier.

After Ride Feed: Nothing planned this time.

Safety Issues: This ride is recommended for experienced cyclists (all paces ok). We encourage people to ride at their own pace and emphasize safety and strict adherence to traffic rules. Be careful on the downhill, the switchbacks are tight. Be aware of dehydration and heat exhaustion and bring some sunscreen. Helmets must be worn at all times.

Cancellation: If we don't cancel on July 14 due to a poor forecast, we will ride even if it drizzles. Heavy rain cancells.

RSVP: RSVPs are particularly encouraged as we may change the time of departure or cancel at the last minute due to weather conditions. Only those who RSVP will be updated about possible changes.
